Stucco And Siding
You may not have the budget to build an entire house, but replacing siding can be the next best thing for getting a completely different look. As might be expected, there are several options for siding.
Wood. Whether you choose cedar, pine, spruce, redwood, cypress, or engineered wood, your home will have a warm, natural look. Wood siding can be arranged in horizontal rows called clapboard, or irregular shingles called "shakes." Wood is extremely long lasting, but does require a bit more maintenance.
Vinyl. Virtually maintenance free and extremely low cost, vinyl is often created to mimic the look of wood and other products. It can crack or warp and doesn't help insulate the home in the same way wood does.
Metals. Stainless steel is great for achieving an ultra-modern look, and it also resists rot and bug infestations. On the downside, it doesn't insulate a building and can rust. Aluminum is less popular today, but is sometimes used in ocean-side locations.
Composites. If you like the look of one of the above materials but don't live in an area suited for it, you may want to consider composite siding.
You can also skip the siding all together and opt for stucco, a type of plaster with a cement base that can be finished with a variety of textures from smooth to raked to swirled. It is usually used on mission or Spanish-style homes.
