Concrete
Created by combining an aggregate (usually sand, gravel, or crushed stone), a binder (natural or synthetic cement), chemical additives, and water, concrete is one of the most used building materials in the world.
In residential building, most people think of concrete only for the foundation and driveway, but it is also now a hot material for kitchen countertops because of its ability to be formed into almost any shape. It can also be used for everything from fireplaces surrounds to sinks and vessels to an entire home. Color, texture, and pattern choices are just as varied as concrete is no longer available in only drab gray. In fact, concrete can give the look of more expensive materials such as tile for a fraction of the cost.
Because not all concrete is created equal, when hiring a concrete contractor or fabricator, be sure to ask for a sample. It can make a huge difference, especially in decorative concrete projects. Also be sure to take all of the precautions you would with any contractor: Do plenty of research both online and through other homeowners. Call several firms in your area and get many cost estimates, and finally never rely on a verbal agreement. Instead, always agree upon everything in writing before work begins.
