Handyman Services
A handyman is skilled in various odd jobs. Generally a handyman will be used for projects that don't require a license, such as small repairs, painting, switching outlets, light fixtures, replacing doors and windows, constructing outdoor benches, hanging large mirrors or paintings, and building shelves. They are best for on-going maintenance, rather than large-scale new construction. In fact, most handyman jobs can be done in a day or less.
Handymen may be employed by a residential or commercial building complex or a handyman services company. Many are self-employed. There isn't a lot of oversight of the handyman profession, so obtaining trustworthy referrals and recommendations is extremely important. If you are working on a major remodel or have just completed one, it's a good idea to ask your general contractor if he or she knows of a good handyman. Then if you do need a small fix later on, you'll have that information handy.
Determining the cost of a project takes some legwork. Most handymen are paid for a job, rather than by hour, but the only way to know if you are getting a fair price is to get quotes from several different firms and people. Also be sure to ask if an estimate includes both materials and labor. Finally, hiring a handyman, especially one not employed by a firm, can seem very casual, but this is still a business transaction. Don't forget to make sure everyone involved agrees to all terms in writing and to take all the precautions you would normally take when hiring an outside person. This will ensure there are no bumps down the road.
